From honoring Sacramento women making history today to celebrating single young professionals, GOTG loves championing women kicking ass in their respective fields. So why should farm-to-fork be any different?
And once we started digging, man oh man, were we flooded with recommendations on farmers, chefs and advocates that are leading Sacramento’s farm-to-fork movement.
Quick refresher: On October 31, 2012, Mayor Kevin Johnson declared Sacramento the nation’s Farm-to-Fork Capital (Facebook, Twitter), largely because Sacramento is the largest producing state of agriculture in the nation and, locally, 70 percent of the region’s land is agricultural, forest or other open space. Additionally, the region contains 7,000 to 8,000 acres of boutique farms and provides numerous public sales platforms at more than 50 regional farmers markets, many of which are year-round fixtures (source). The following September 2013, the city hosted it’s first Farm-to-Fork Festival with the second occurring this September 13-28, 2014, with the free festival on Capitol Mall this Saturday, September 27 (full list of events here). The movement – which also addresses related issues like obesity/health and food deserts – has taken off like wildfire. The Bee reported that organizers were “stunned” when over 25,000 people showed up to the inaugural festival – and they’re expecting around 35,000 this year.
