She likes to wear black, loves her “gettin stuff done” boots, and can’t decide if her best friend is scissors or make-up.
She can glam you up like the rock star you feel like you are, or give you an updo that is sophisticated and elegant. Meet Tania Voochen of Byuti Salon (1414 H Street)…
Tania loves all the romance of the classics, and all the grit of the street scene, her ability to listen intently to what her clients want, have earned her the respect of people from all walks of life.
I got to watch and document Tania; cut, color and do an updo on Jill, one of her regulars.
It began with the styling of her Barbie’s …doesn’t everything awesome?! And evolved into a love for all things fashion and beauty.
Once she realized her inability to sew and her extreme distaste for math – being a beautician seemed the perfect fit for Tania. She could avoid college math and a sewing machine and still manage to to be surrounded by fashion and stylish trends. Her love for the fashion world has landed her on music video and modeling shoots doing hair and make-up.
In her everyday life, Tania loves to be behind the chair, cutting, coloring and styling her clients so they feel like a refreshed version of themselves.
I personally have had a variation of the bob since I was 4, and every 3-4 weeks Tania reinvents my very basic look.
After photographing Tania in action on a couple of occasions I thought I would photograph her in and around her space, sort of a little lifestyle shoot, showing off her sense of style, confidence and general fabulousness.

Aside from loving all things photography, I also am a self proclaimed “dog lady.” I love cheese of any kind (accompanied by wine), gardening (even though my fiance says my thumb is black), and I will try just about anything once. I have a very serious distaste for Barry Manilow (how did he get famous anyway?!) and in my spare time I can be found blogging all of my photographic discoveries. Tania is one of my favorite stylists at Byuti. Her smile and individuality make her one of the best in Sacramento.
I have been getting my hair done with Tania for over three years. Not only has she completely transformed my hair (we’re talking Carrie Bradshaw season 1 frizz to season 6 fabulousness) and given me the best cuts/color I’ve ever had, but she’s also become a great friend. Even though I’m a long-time client, she still “studies” my hair for about 5-10 minutes every visit and takes the time to ask, “What are you liking? What’s not working? Are you doing anything different lately?” etc. She also takes the time to teach me how to style and curl my hair. Tania is fantastic and I highly, highly recommend her.
WoW! Who knew that the local blogosphere was so rife with quality writing and AMAZING photos???
I came to read about my favorite and VERY inspiring hair stylist slash entrepreneur slash Old Soul friend Tania Voochen, and got so much more than I’d hoped!!!
Yay, Tania! Beautiful work, Chantel Elder!
I love that salon! It’s so beautiful. Nice to know who to ask for there. Great post again, Chantel, and your photos are amazing as usual!
[...] Chantel: Tania Voochen at Byuti (1414 H Street) - she is my home-girl and go-to-hair-extraordinaire. She knows when I need a change and has the guts to tell me when my requested new do will look ridiculous on me ( I wanted to look like Florence from Florence and the Machine and my skin color totally doesn’t support flaming red). She keeps me from making bad decisions but encourages change and updating. She has been in my life almost as long as my husband. Currently Tania keeps my hair dark all over with heavy bangs. Yes, I am on the Zooey Deschannel bandwagon too and love it almost as much as I love Tania. [...]
