GOTG Favorites: Brunch in Sacramento

AIMEE: I love Tower Cafe’s brunch and patio. Not only does it have an eggs-ellent menu and a killer Caesar salad (my kryptonite), it offers the best brunch entertainment: people watching. Prepare to wait at least a few minutes or if the line is too long you can always walk 2 blocks to Iron Steaks, as I did one packed Saturday. I was lured away from Tower by a sign touting Great Brunch No Wait and it did not disappoint!

ALANNA: Definitely INK Drinks and Eats. The fried egg sliders are delish AND Saturday and Sunday = bottomless Mimosas. I don’t think I need to say anymore.

AMELIA: My old standby for brunch when the weather is nice is the patio of Tower Cafe. The menu is varied enough from big yummy omelets to “global-themed” salads and sandwiches. The patio is the key place with its jungle-like atmosphere as you sit surrounded by all kinds of exotic plants and flowers. And, it’s a central enough location for my husband and me to ride our bikes from Midtown and feel like we got just enough of a workout to warrant their custardy French toast!

AMY: Not exactly on the Grid but the brunch at Dad’s Kitchen in Land Park is the best. They have phenomenal breakfast sandwiches I can’t get enough of. When the weather is good, sit on the patio. If the wait at Dad’s is too long, walk up the street to the brunch at Taylor’s Kitchen. Although all the dishes are a little richer than I like to eat, they’re delicious and worth every calorie. Their Portuguese donuts and breakfast pizza are particularly fantastic.

ASHLEY R.: I’m a big fan of Hook & Ladder’s brunch menu because it includes lunch-like options. I don’t like eggs, or pancakes, or waffles, or anything real breakfasty, so it’s nice to go somewhere that is looking out for characters like me. Also, they have a lovely brunch cocktail menu to shake that hair off the dog. Another fave is Taylor’s Kitchen. They often have special crepes on their menu, and they are delicious.

CHANTEL: I swear by the biscuits and gravy at The Shady Lady. Perfect combo of salty and sweet!

CHELSEA: Lucky for the Sac brunch crowd, 58 Degrees & Holding just launched a brunch program recently and it’s to die.  Bottomless bubbles between 1:00p and 5:00p pair perfectly with their to die for mac n’ cheese.  As a vegetarian, I always appreciate a grilled cheese sandwich that goes beyond the norm, and the 58 Degrees version totally delivers.  My other go to has been Pangaea on Franklin.  They are always on point with those bottomless mimosas (are you sensing a pattern here?), their burger has won citywide awards for being the best and their patio is a great place to park it when bringing your pooch to brunch with you.  It’s definitely Rocco’s favorite.  The bottle shop connected to the restaurant is a nice touch, too, if you want to head home with a few of your favorite craft brews.  

JAMEE: This may be a tad out of “midtown” but my favorite go to brunch whether hung over or if I just really need a great meal is Chargins. The staff is great, you can watch your favorite sports game on one of the multiple flat screens and the drinks are always flowing! The most popular breakfast item on the menu is The Franks Fried Rice Special. NOTE: If you get there after 10:30 on a Sunday morning you may have to sit at the bar for a few while you wait for a table. Chargins is a weekend brunch staple. JULIA: One of my favorite go-to brunch spots is Cafe Bernardo. I prefer the location on Capitol to the one on R, mainly because I prefer the atmosphere of the adjoining Monkey Bar to R15, and also because I swear that the food tastes better at that location. I can’t stray from ordering the breakfast burrito because it is so delicious. Another frequent stop is Orphan. Everything on the menu is amazing, but my favorite is the Papas Loco. What is better than a plate of rosemary potatoes topped with beans, sour cream, jalapeños, avocado, and salsa served with a side of tortillas? I will tell you, nothing is better than this. Orphan’s only downfall is that I can’t get my bloody mary fix on there!

KELLIE: For vegetarians…and anyone really, my vote is for Fox and Goose. They have an entire section that’s Tofu Scrambles, and the majority of meat products can be replaced with spinach, tomato or tempeh. Plus, the Olallieberry scones!? With Devonshire cream. Yummy.  Gets crazy packed on the weekends and especially Sunday, so if you can manage an early bird brunch, you’re more likely to not end up with an hour wait.

KELLY: Capitol Garage is an obvious choice. If the sweet potato hash is on the menu, order it! Another phenomenal brunch is at Iron Steaks. You don’t have to wait for two hours to get a table and they have a huge brunch menu including lots of really interesting french toast options and bottomless mimosas.

LAINE: I’m with Kelly, a little-known brunch gem in our community is Iron Steaks.  They have an incredible brunch menu, the nicest staff (the kind who remembers your name the next time you come in), and you never have to wait.  Also, though I try not to do this as much anymore as I’m starting to near 30, they have never judged me once for coming in past noon in my pajamas and ordering some hair of the dog… just saying.

LAURA: If it’s Saturday, I’m likely on LowBrau’s patio because it’s a #twofer with the Midtown Farmers Market right next door. You can’t go wrong with the breakfast sammy (with arugula and sriracha aioli!) or biscuits and gravy. It’s located in basically the epicenter of #midtownSac so you’re likely to run into friends and colleagues, as well as meet new people on the other end of your picnic table. I’ve also recently fallen back in love with Tank House BBQ and Bar. More of a “cheat day” and boy is it: how does a brisket and tot hash sound? Or breakfast tacos with hints of cumin and lime crema?

LISA: I’m on the Leslie Knope level of breakfast/waffle love. I could eat breakfast (read waffles) for every meal and I’d be fat, happy and probably a little sick. One of my favorite breakfast/brunch spots on the grid is Fox and Goose. They’ve got all the morning standards down, and they do them well. A new favorite midtown brunch spot is Iron Horse Tavern, but like any new trendy place, there’s always a bit of a wait. Off the grid, I enjoy Roxy on Fair Oaks and Evan’s Kitchen in East Sacramento. 

LYNDSEY: My favorite brunch on the grid would have to be the breakfast pizza at 33rd Street Bistro. It’s flat bread the size of the plate topped with prosciutto, mozzarella and sunny side up eggs. I like to also add tomatoes. And of course like many other places they offer bottomless mimosas!!

MEGAN M.: I love brunch in Sacramento. We have countless places that are mouthwatering whether you want to go healthy or you’re looking for a boozy brunch. One of my favorites is Bacon and Butter. If you’re looking to indulge this is the best place in town to do it. Whether it’s their grilled cheese eggs benedict, yes I did say grilled cheese or a jam-packed breakfast burrito or chicken and waffles. Only thing is, like many of the best spots in town, you’ll have a wait that can easily be an hour. To beat it get there before 9am or go during the week.

MEGAN W: I’m a total sucker for a good eggs benedict and Iron Horse Tavern makes my favorite. Instead of putting the egg and spinach on an english muffin, they put them on a crispy potato cake. It’s seriously amazing. And if I feel like going for sweet over savory, it’s always a debate until I place my order- will it be the stuffed french toast or the cinnamon roll pancakes?? Either way, I win!

MEGHAN S.: For me, brunch is really about the people you’re with in addition to the food and beverages (flavored mimosas!). That’s why I love Geek Girl Brunch Sacramento. It brings together ladies who geek and brunch in themed events throughout the Sacramento area. Through Geek Girl Brunch, I’ve managed to discover my new favorite brunch place is The Porch. Because who doesn’t love beignets and other yummy southern breakfast treats!

MICHELLE: Tator Tots. I mean, Cafeteria 15L. So yes, I mean Tator Tots. Crunchy potatoes with truffle oil and herbs and cheese and… need I go on? Well, they also make a chocolate banana waffle, amazing skillets, and damn good biscuits and gravy. Slightly off grid, you can’t possibly go wrong with Bacon&Butter. Like, ever. I fell in love with their carb loaded menu while sipping a Bloody Mary made by one of my favorite bartenders in early 2015, and have since made it a point to make an at least quarterly visit and stalk their Instagram account for syrupy videos.

PAOLA: Cafe Bernardo for sure. Their Amaretto French Toast with almonds is enough to get me out of bed on some not-so-easy-as-Sunday mornings. Craving something savory? Try the Eggs Bernardo, the place’s own fab spin on the brunch staple.

RACHEL: If for some unforeseen reason I’m awake before bottomless mimosas end at 2PM, my first choice of places to go is actually Shari’s in Greenhaven. I like any place that doesn’t force you to choose between breakfast and lunch. What if I want chicken nuggets with a side of eggs? I deserve the choice. But realistically, we all know that I’m far too lazy to make that seven-mile drive so the likeliest place I will be is Firestone Public House for a side of bacon and 82 Vodka pineapples.

STACY: I love brunch so much, especially a spot with bottomless mimosas, but the place that I absolutely crave the most is Roxy Restaurant and Bar. Their biscuits and gravy are AMAZING and the eggs benedict are something to write home about. The biscuits are cheddar biscuits and the eggs benedict is served on a potato cake instead of a traditional English muffin. I also have an insider’s tip … you can order half biscuits and gravy and half eggs benedict, so you get one of each for the same price.
