A Sacramento Staycation on the River at the Delta King
By Megan MacNee
One place in Sacramento that I feel most all of us have visited but so few have spent the night on is the Delta King down in Old Sacramento. After over six years living in this city and often visiting the ship for cocktails, I finally spent a night on the Delta King and found it the perfect getaway without leaving the city.
One great thing about Old Sacramento is even when you’re just a few miles away from home you feel like you’re in a whole other place. That held true for my stay on the Delta King.
What it’s Like
Initially, I wasn’t so sure how the trip would go but walked away impressed. You can take a Lyft there or park your car at valet. Then check into what were more spacious rooms than I expected. You’ll find a quaint charm in the old school feel of the short doors and vintage details in the room.
The rooms were comfortable and had everything you need for a night away. I brought a bottle of wine with me and enjoyed it on the private deck overlooking the river during sunset. After that it’s easy to just pop downstairs and enjoy dinner at the Pilot House or to take the short walk to any of the great destinations in Old Sacramento.
The next morning, breakfast at the Pilot House is included with your room and it is the perfect way to start the morning before exploring more of Old Sacramento. For rooms under $150, it is a fun way to spend the weekend. Whether you’re looking for that romantic getaway or a throwback with the kids it’s a great option for a staycation right here in Sacramento.
A Romantic Night on the River
If you’re looking for an ideal overnight date without the drive the Delta King is the perfect launching point for a romantic evening in Old Sacramento. Check into the hotel in the late afternoon and get cozy in your room. Then you can either bring your own bottle of wine to sit on the upper deck, private for hotel guests, or head down to the Delta Bar & Grill where you can get a cocktail and appetizer as the sun sets over the river. It’s one of Sacramento’s classic sights and if you haven’t done it before, its a must.
Then enjoy dinner at one of Old Sacramento’s delicious restaurants. My favorite is Ten 22 where you can either order a handful of appetizers to dig in tapas style or you can order an entrée and dessert to share.
Exploring the Past with Your Kids
Enjoy a blast from the past with the kids when you stay over at the Delta King. Visit the California State Railroad Museum and hop on the Sacramento Southern Railroad for a ride along the river. You’ll also find a variety of tours from the Sacramento History Museum including their Gold Rush Experience Tours or Underground Tour. Plus, if you dare, take the kids to Candy Barrel where they can enjoy an old school sugar rush.
Getting Away Right Here in Sacramento
Next time you’re looking for a getaway don’t forget to look close to home. You’ll find an easy vacation that will give you a chance to explore your own backyard. Take a trip to the Delta King where you can relax on the river, take in a little history and be walking distance from some of the best restaurants in town.
