Spring in Sacramento is finally here, which means we will all be spending more time in the sun.

However, finding the right sunscreen to protect your skin from the California sun can be difficult. Given that 90% of skin aging is cause by UV damage to the skin (yikes!), it is imperative to wear sunscreen everyday to protect against wrinkles and photo damage, and more importantly skin cancer!

If you are like me, it may have been a struggle to find a sunscreen that you like putting on your skin. So many formulations feel greasy and heavy, which frankly no one wants to put on their skin every morning. And yes, you need to apply your sunscreen everyday even if it is cloudy out!

Here is a primer on what to look for in any sunscreen and I’ve also included some of my favorite sunscreens in different formulations.

Sunscreen Musts:

  • At least an SPF of 30 – This will provide enough protection for everyday. SPF 30 keeps out 97% of the UV radiation.
  • Broad Spectrum – This ensures you are protected from both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Physical Sunscreen such as Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide – Physical sunscreens, as opposed to chemical sunscreens, generally provide a greater degree of broad spectrum protection and are less harsh on the skin than chemical sunscreens. Look for high concentrations of these ingredients. (5% or higher)
  • Water-Resistant – This is especially important for those that are more active.

Top Sunscreen Picks:

Elta MD UV Physical SPF 46 – This sunscreen also has a tint, which means it melts into your skin without that white cakey look that some products have. It’s also oil-free and has a matte finish, making it great for acne prone skin types. When it dries on your skin it truly feels like you are wearing nothing.
colorscience

Colorescience Sunforgettable Brushes in SPF 30 or SPF 50 Who knew that sunscreen powder existed?! These brushes are amazing for reapplication. You can keep them in your purse and reapply during the day. The powder gives your skin a matte finish and absorbs any oils. The zinc and titanium percentages are also crazy high with these products, ensuring you are getting amazing protection.
PRO TIP: Don’t forget to reapply at least every two hours if you are in the sun for extended periods of time. Most importantly, for all you sun worshipers out there, remember there is no such thing as a “healthy tan!”
