Celebrating Generosity on Giving Tuesday
By Aimee Darville
Last week we celebrated giving thanks, then we celebrated giving money to companies big and small in the name of a good deal. While there is something to be said for the glorious feeling of paying half price, it’s time to celebrate giving back!
Today is Giving Tuesday, a worldwide celebration of generosity. On Giving Tuesday communities come together for one common cause: to give back! This is the latest and last in a growing line of holiday marketing efforts: Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday and now….Giving Tuesday! Now that you’ve checked off your holiday wish list “needs”, it’s time to focus on a different kind of need.
The need of many people around the world and here in Sacramento to properly feed, clothe and educate themselves. The need of organizations who provide a social safety to those in need to fund their programs. The holiday season is the biggest time of year for charitable giving. Many charities receive funding in November and December to support their programs throughout the year.
Today I challenge you to put your money where your heart is. Find a cause close to your heart and give a first time or recurring gift to support it, big or small.
I found the cause closest to my heart, Food Literacy Center, about 2 years ago. I was googling answers to one of my many questions about America’s food labyrinth and came across the Food Literacy Academy. After a year and a half of volunteering, I’m now furthering food literacy education full time. With two generations of Americans that don’t know how to cook, Food Literacy Center’s mission is to teach low-income elementary school children nutrition and cooking. I help inspire kids to eat their veggies and inspire our community to take action and support food literacy education.
So look into your heart and wallet and give to a cause you believe in. Not sure which non-profit you’d like to support? Here are some fennel-tastic resources to help you decide which charity to donate to:
– Guidestar is a national information service which connects donors to trusted non-profits.
– The Sacramento Region Community Foundation is a local resource for giving to charities in the Sacramento area.
