Sacramento Zoo: Twilight Thursdays
By Meghan Sullivan
Looking for something fun to do on a Thursday night this summer that isn’t just another happy hour?
Head out to the Sacramento Zoo (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) for Twilight Thursdays ! For the next several Thursdays (from 5:30 to 8pm, June 19th to July 31st) you can enjoy the animals, along with cars, music, and food specials all centered around a particular theme. I went out for the first Twilight Thursday of the season – Hot Rod Night. Not only did I get to enjoy the musical stylings of Elvis and the Experience (an Elvis tribute band) but I also got to enjoy watching kids and adults alike dance to the music.
There was a good crowd, many of whom brought their own lawn chairs and snacks to sit and enjoy the music. I also made sure to sample the dinner special, a very tasty Memphis style BBQ pulled pork with sweet potato fries. The Kampala Café serves the dinner special, but there was also a tent near the reptile house and band where you could purchase the special as well as tasty adult beverages. Bear in mind, there’s usually a pretty decent sized line (until about the last half hour), but it moves quickly.
As entertaining as the music, food, and cars are, the real draw for me is the zoo itself in the evening. As dusk approaches and the temperature starts to drop, the animals in hiding start to emerge. In fact, right about 7:30 last night, the magnificent lion emerged to stand on his large rock and roar. It was straight out of The Lion King.
So head on out to the zoo next Thursday and see for yourself. Next week is reggae week and Arden Park Roots are playing. They are veterans of Concert in the Park and always put on a good show.
If you don’t want to wait until Thursday next week, this Saturday, from 6 to 9pm, is the annual King of Feasts Benefit at the zoo. Eat, drink, and enjoy the creatures at this annual luau themed event. You can hula hoop or bid at three different silent auctions if you aren’t too busy eating and drinking the treats available from all the wonderful local vendors. And if you’re imbibing, be sure to have a designated driver! To see the vendor list and get your tickets to this event visit http://www.saczoo.org/kingoffeasts
