Mother is a Game Changer for Sacramento
By Laura Braden and Lisa Murphy
Mother (1023 K Street) (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) is a new vegetarian restaurant in downtown Sacramento that offers (affordable) seasonal and fresh fare, with loads of gluten-free and vegan options. They strive to offer “southern american cooking featuring dishes that will undoubtedly play with the nostalgia receptors in your brain. The food is rustic, dynamic, and unfussy.”
In reality, their food is so good that you forget it’s vegetarian, which (for us) makes it a game-changer in Sacramento’s culinary scene.
LAURA: I have a love obsession with bacon … I’d never eaten brussels sprouts, grilled onions, avocados or kale until I moved to Sacramento … I followed the Skinny Bitch diet for three weeks before getting hungover and running to In’N’Out … So I’m not exactly Mother’s key demographic. But oh, holy moly, am I one of their biggest fans!
The line was out the door, but it moved quickly. The staff were hustling and friendly, and we still managed to snag a table by the window. I ordered the roasted brussels sprouts with dried white peaches. They were salty and crispy, and I’m still craving them as I write this. I also ordered their daily foccaccia special, which had onions, arugala, rosemary and parmesan. It was basically a piece of bread with a salad on top, but it was amazing. Totally sweet/savory, and neither dish made me feel like taking a nap afterwards. I also grabbed a glass of Vanilla Pine Kombucha, which sounded awful, but the cashier assured me it was delicious. He wasn’t wrong – it was crisp and refreshing without being too sweet. I live at 15th/L and work at 14th/L so I’m thrilled to have another (actually healthy) lunch spot. I love everything about this place, and I can’t wait to go back!
LISA: To be perfectly honest, when Laura suggested we check out Mother for lunch I expressed excitement over this new restaurant with an entirely vegetarian/vegan menu, but inside I was filled with hesitation. When I think eating vegetarian I automatically have flash backs to my 21 day vegan challenge, which was a super enlightening experience and I’m glad I did it, but I was hungry the entire 21 days.
So I made a mental note as I was leaving my office of what snacks I had here to fill me up, after what I assumed would be a tasty but light lunch. Boy was I wrong. The portions at Mother were generous but not overwhelming, and the flavors were out of this world. I tried the Chile Verde w/Roasted Potatoes, it was heavenly. Potatoes, legumes, a verde sauce, and lots of creamy cheese. I don’t know how Mother did it, but they made me forget entirely that the dish was vegetarian. I’m really glad the chefs at Mother can prove to those weary of a plant based diet, that eating vegetarian or vegan doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice flavor or fullness. I highly recommend you check it out!
