Found: Best Doggie Daycares in Sacramento

By Laura Braden

Leaving your pets with strangers – heck, just leaving your pets in general – can be stressful. You want them to have fun, but you also want to feel confident that you’ve left them in responsible hands.

With the holidays just around the corner, I figured it was time to give the rundown on four great boarding/doggie daycare options. Whether traveling for work, the holidays or for pleasure, I’ve used all four before and can attest to their professionalism and genuine dedication to the well-being of our four-legged children. (Click on the business name for prices and more information.)

Grateful Dog

(430 17th Street) Grateful Dog is my all-time favorite. Betty White gets so excited when we walk through the door! They have cage-free playing rooms (both for daycare and boarding), splash pool and couches for naps. They also have in-house grooming services, a boutique selling food, treats and sweaters, and a self-service washing station. I also love that they provide a report card after each visit…which of course I post on the fridge because I’m psycho about my pets.

River Dogs Resort

(2385 Hart Avenue) A close second is River Dogs Resort in West Sacramento. Run out of their home, Dina is a “crazy dog lady” just like me and goes above and beyond to make sure your dogs are happy/safe. Example? I once called 18 hours out from a last minute work trip, but she managed to squeeze us in. She’s also good about texting you updates and pictures. They have a HUGE backyard, which my pups apparently utilized because they slept for two solid days after their last stay.

Naptime at Cha Cha’s

Cha Cha’s Doggie Daycare

(910 57th Street) Similar to Grateful, Cha Cha’s is cage-free, and they play soft music at night to lull your pup to sleep. They have amazing training options (single or group classes), as well as birthday party packages, and bath/blow dry services. Extra bonus is their webcam, which allows you to keep tabs on your furkid while you’re away.

Wag Hotel

(1759 Enterprise Blvd, West Sacramento) Wag is “hotel-style” boarding, rather than cage free, complete with plush couches and classical music piped into the rooms. They have a HUGE menu of amenities and services but watch out, most come at an extra charge so pay attention. Extra bonus is their indoor pool (extra charge) and the fact that they accept cats.

Other options (recommended from friends, but I’ve never tried them)…

BONUS TIP: Remember, before you become a regular client, any reputable facility is going to require you to come in for an initial consultation/visit to make sure the dog is sociable, up-to-date on shots, etc so DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE.
