Preview: Midtown Cocktail Week 2013

mcwBy Kelly Conroy

I’m a bad Sacramentan (that’s a word, right?). Other than the occasional Gin Daisy at Shady Lady, I know close to nothing about the local mixology culture – which is a shame considering the famed Midtown Cocktail Week (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) now in its 6th year.

I’m not one to typically seek out an artisan cocktail. A glass of Jameson or 16 ounces of a Hefeweizen will usually do me just fine. But this year, with a theme that promises entertainment and events filled with tasty alcoholic treats at a reasonable price, I’ll be cashing in my MCW virginity for a seat at the show.

Each day features an official event in line with the week’s “Welcome to the Show” theme. From a cocktail competition to an art show to an awards ceremony, this year’s MCW is sure to keep your attention. In addition to the official events, nearly 20 pop-up events will be taking place all around town to educate and delight your liquor swilling palette.

Midtown Cocktail Week is just around the corner and will only last five days, so mark your calendars for August 21 –  25 and enjoy the show!

Wednesday, 8/21 – The Big Show

LowBrau (1050 20th Street) will host the cocktail competition from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Six local bartenders will each make a cocktail for the judging panel and a $10.00 admission gets you 6 cocktail tastings. RSVP on Facebook here.

Thursday, 8/22 – The Kabuki Show

Hook and Ladder Manufacturing Company (1630 S Street) hosts the FREE night of Japanese culture from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The show will include a Takio Dan Performance and a Sake Barrel Ceremony. Japanese whiskeys, Japanese beers and other drink specials start at $6. RSVP on Facebook here.

Friday, 8/23 – The Best Dam Show

Put on your classy vintage attire and head over to the Grange (926 J Street) for a night of time travel from 6 p.m. to close. MCW’s website describes the event as, “an Amsterdam inspired Hollywood Golden Era Grand Gatsbyesque party somewhere between 1920 and 1950.” Now how could you pass that up? The evening will be filled with entertainment, music, dancing, and libations. Plus, admission is FREE! RSVP on Facebook here.

Saturday, 8/24 – The West-End Art Show

From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Blackbird Kitchen & Bar (1015 9th Street) will feature downtown artists, live demonstrations, music, and drinks. Come enjoy all that the West End has to offer with this FREE event. RSVP on Facebook here.

Sunday, 8/25 – Best in Show

To cap off another successful Midtown Cocktail Week, Red Rabbit (2718 J Street) & Makers Mark are teaming up to host The Best in Show Closing Party. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. you are invited to enjoy BBQ and bourbon while 1st place ribbons are awarded to the deserving participants of Midtown Cocktail Week 2013. Admission is FREE and includes carnival inspired entertainment! RSVP on Facebook here.
