There's a New Club in Town: LUPEC
There’s a new club in town – welcome LUPEC Sacramento!
LUPEC or “Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails” is a woman’s only cocktail society focused on creating a platform for ladies to network, empower, educate and simply have a good time while enjoying and celebrating fine spirits and libations with other women in the cocktail/spirits industry as well as with fellow enthusiasts.
While Sacramento has a plethora of clubs and networking organizations for woman, none exclusively cater to the education of traditional cocktails for both industry professionals and enthusiasts alike.
Founded in Pittsburgh in 2001, LUPEC’s mission is awesome: “In a post-millenial world of beer and prepackaged Chex Mix™, LUPEC works tirelessly to breed, raise, and release cocktails that are endangered or even believed to be extinct.”
LUPEC seeks to “invoke and honor the spirits of their Forebroads; continue the American tradition of dangerous women calling themselves Ladies and getting together in groups, clubs, and societies to work undercover while they chip away at the patriarchy; to protect the collective Joie de Vivre of LUPEC members by assuring them at least one good party a month; to encourage the accumulation and use of vintage serving and barware.”
LUPEC Comes to SacTown
I attended their inaugural event (March 19 at Ten22) and was totally impressed. They’re is excited to join the national network with the help and inspiration of the lovely ladies of LUPEC San Francisco and the support of the Sacramento Chapter of the United States Bartenders Guild (USBG).
Kiki Braverman (Pure Spirits) and Meryll Cawn (CLEARGRAPE) are the original founders of LUPEC SF and were approached by Chris Sinclair the President of Sacramento USBG with the idea to create a Sacramento Chapter of LUPEC. While USBG celebrates men and women alike, Chris noticed that the number of women was significantly low compared to the number of men in the organization. To celebrate women in the libation and cocktail industry, he encouraged Kiki and Meryll to get the ball rolling in the creation of LUPEC Sacramento.
LUPEC Sacramento is an informal club with no obligations, no fees … you just the desire to join forces, exchange ideas and simply have a good time – in style.
