The Farmer's Market is Coming to (Mid)town!
By Aimee Darville
Imagine gourmet pastries, artisan cheeses, exotic oil, pasture-raised eggs, fresh seafood, and farm fresh fruits and vegetables so close it only takes a few minutes to bike or walk there. If you live in Midtown, this vision is about to became a reality year round at the parking lot on J and 20th!
The Midtown Farmer’s Market will run every Saturday starting April 27th from 8:00am – 1:00pm, rain or shine.
This is perfect for me so I can sleep in and walk over around noon to get dollar bags of apple or pluots!
The market will showcase “60 – 70% local seasonal produce” Tashina Brito, Marketing and events manager for the Midtown Business Association explained when I asked what should I expect at the MBA”s new market.
The other market wares will consist of pasta, honey, grass-fed beefs and the stand I am most excited about the freshly line-caught seafood.
“We will have a great selection of farmers and vendors, which include favorites like Feeding Crane Farms, Rio De Parra’s, Dragon Mushrooms and Contreras and sociality foods like the Pasta Queen, Smokey Ridge Charcuterie and the Cultured Kitchen ” Marie Hall, Executive Director of BeMoneySmartUSA and market manager detailed in the Sacramento Press.
This farm to fork haven is a win-win-win with, benefitting farmers, local businesses alike and non-profits alike; with the number of local farmers set to sell their crops capped at 20, there is already a waiting list for a booth. According to the Sacramento Press, “Central city chefs and restauranteurs who register can pre-order for delivery or pickup, as well as tour the market for early bird orders.”
The Midtown Farmer’s Market will be the 5th farmer’s market in Northern California under BeMoneySmartUSA’s management. This money management social enterprise based in Carmichael trains and educates youth as well as adults in finance with hands on experience, like at the market booths.
You can forget the excuse that parking in Midtown is not worth it. For drivers, there is free saturday street parking. For bikers, there will be a bike valet run by the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates.
Tashina of the MBA added, “we would eventually like to add non-food vendors on Second Saturday and possibly for a full month every season as well as invite restaurants to sell hot food”.
