Beets – To Keep the Fire Burning
Oh, the power of the beautiful beet. It’s been my experience that people either love beets, or absolutely despise them.
I have to say, until about 3 years ago I was in the latter group, believing that these so-called healthy foods tasted very similar to dirt. Growing up, I’d only experienced pickled beets, which was a huge disappointment since anything that shiny red was supposed to taste like strawberry jam.
A few years ago, after learning about the healing powers of beets, I decided to try to spark up a friendship with them. Oh my, what a friendship we’ve created! After countless hours in the kitchen juicing, blending, slicing and roasting, I’m happy to introduce my Love Potion.
Love potion? Despite being the color of Valentines Day, roses and sultry red lips, beets are actually an aphrodisiac, hence the name: Love Potion.
Beets contain a high amount of Boron, a trace mineral which increases human sex hormones in both men and women. Drink up ladies!!! (and make some for your partner too)
The Romans actually discovered this important fact many years ago. Beetroot juice was considered an aphrodisiac to Apollo and his worshippers. Also in mythology, Aphrodite is said to have eaten beets to retain her beauty, and in folk magic, if a man and woman eat from the same beet, they will fall in love. We also find evidence of beets being used in Pompeii, as there are still remnants of beets painted on brothel walls. Oh, the great power of beets!
Besides being the main ingredient in my Love Potion, beets also balance blood pressure, improve cardiovascular function and support liver function.
So, whether you’re a fan of the beet or not, I encourage you to partake in this natural aphrodisiac regularly. As my Valentine’s gift to you, I’m sharing my Love Potion, have fun!
- 1 medium sized beet
- 1 medium cucumber
- 2 oranges
- 1 lime
Trim the greens off your beet. Slice the peeling off the oranges and lime. Individually place each ingredient in your juicer. Mix with a wooden spoon, then pour through a strainer into your cup or pitcher. When available, use organic produce.
