Meet Uber, Your New Best Transpo Friend

Another sign that our fair town is growing? The arrival of Uber.

Uber (Facebook, Twitter) is a town car service that’s fully integrated into your smartphone’s GPS.

Simply download the app (iPhone, Android, web/SMS), create a profile (complete with your secure credit card information), and summon a private driver anytime you need a luxury sedan/SUV. No more fighting for taxis – or waiting 20 minutes for a taxi that never arrives.

From the app you can check the driver’s status (even see their picture), get notified when they arrive and pay with the tap of a button. The tip is included in the price, and you can rate the driver (but they can rate you back so mean drunks beware!).

They’ve been around since 2009, but until now, they’ve only been in uber-large cities (word play!) like New York, Berlin, San Francisco, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, Boston and Paris. Part of the reason they’re expanding into Sacramento is because of our proximity to their “mother ship” in San Francisco.

Uber Sacramento’s coverage area covers the full grid, as well as the surrounding neighborhoods of West and East Sacramento, Curtis/Land Park and Arden-Arcade. They note that their coverage is constantly expanding, so it’s possible to get vehicles in the outer suburbs – just be sure to check the app in advance for availability and ETA. Check out their full coverage map here.

Their pricing is a tad more than regular taxis and “town car Steve,” but way cheaper than a limo. The app’s integration into your smartphone + being able to pay at the click of a button + being in a fancy town car makes Uber worth it.

Side note: A few of us met with Uber staffers Tess and Bennett at the River City Social Club SMEBB mixer at KBar last week, and we were totally impressed with them. They’re young and hip and seem as comfortable grabbing a beer in Midtown as they would be in a boardroom. If their personalities and professionalism are any indication of how Uber is run, Sacramento is in for some great customer service and user experience.

Uber will be on hand TONIGHT at the SMEBB finale party to distribute promo cards to our supporters/readers. In addition, you can use the promo code SacSMEBB for $20 off your first ride (in case you want to use their service to get to the SMEBB party).

Thanks again Uber – and welcome to Sacramento!
