Keep Your Green on the Grid This Holiday Season

By Laura Braden

Spoiler alert – GOTG loves Sacramento. From beach cruising to people watching in dive bars to the hot delta breeze to never having to convince friends it’s time for happy hour, this city is pretty amazing. And one of the many reasons it’s amazing is our plethora of local bars, restaurants, shops and boutiques.

That’s why we were stoked when the Downtown Sacramento Partnership (DSP) and Midtown Business Association (MBA) announced their latest effort to support all things local: Keep Your Green on the Grid.

The goal is simple: shift at least two of your holiday purchases to a local retailer in Old Sac, Downtown or Midtown between November 12 – December 31.

“Our local and independent shops have something to offer that big box stores cannot – a charming holiday shopping experience where shoppers can find quality, unique gifts that can’t be found at the mall.” said MBA Executive Director Liz Studebaker. “We’re hoping that when locals take the pledge to keep their green on the grid this holiday season, our local businesses will see an increase in business and earn some new customers in the long run.”

But this isn’t just some fluffy PR campaign to simply support our local business owners and entrepreneurs (which would be reason enough for us BTW). Shopping local actually produces real economic results. Consider…

  • If 1,000 Sacramentans pledged to shift $25 of their holiday purchases to local and independent retailers on the Grid, we’d generate $25,000 in local retail sales. (Downtown Sacramento Partnership)
  • According the 3/50 Project, for every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. (3/50 Project)

So far, 29 businesses on the Grid have joined the campaign: Bella Vue, Bows & Arrows, Bikenstock Midtown, Cuffs, Denim Spot, Established Apparel, Felicia Strati, Fleet Feet Sports, FreeStyle Clothing Exchange, French Cuff Consignment, Gabby Girl, Getta Clue, Good Stock, G Willikers Toy Emporium, Her Closet Boutique, Heart Clothing Boutique, Identity Boutique, Mea Vita, PhonoSelect, Stage Nine Entertainment Store, Sugar Shack, Taylor’s Art & Soul, The Penny Farthing, U.BE.U. Fashion Boutique, Underground Tasting Room, Village Hat Shop, Time Tested Books, Visions of Eden, and Zanzibar Trading Company.
