Discussion: Wedding Days of Summer

By Ashley Bradley

Spring has sprung and summer is just around the corner, which can only mean one thing: its wedding season. I am not sure when it happened, but I seemed to have reached a stage in my life where most of my friends are either in long-term relationships awaiting engagement, are engaged or are already married. And even if they are single, they are planning a grand wedding via Pinterest. As I am sure most twenty- and thirty-something-year-olds can attest, it is common to attend so many weddings it feels like you’ve memorized the inventory at Crate and Barrel and you’ve racked up enough hotel points to stay at the Ritz.

While I don’t personally believe that you need a big, costly wedding to say your vows, I do enjoy attending them. What’s not to love? It’s a great excuse to put on your best dress, go shopping for fantastic housewares, indulge in highly caloric food and drink a little too much. Oh, and there’s also the celebration of love between two people who are starting their lives together.

According to theknot.com, the average cost of a wedding is about $27,800. That number only includes the cost to the couple; think about how much money attendees spend on gas, air fare, gifts and hotel stays. Collectively, the money spent to host and attend a wedding can be exceedingly high. If $30,000 appeared in your bank account tomorrow, would you spend it on creating your picture-perfect wedding, or would you pay off student loans, buy a new car, buy a house, invest the money, or spend it on something else together? No judgment from me, as I said before, I love all weddings.

So you tell us Sacramento – what’s your favorite thing about wedding season? Favorite spot for the ceremony and reception? Best wedding you’ve been to in Sacramento?

And congratulations to all of the couples who will be tying the knot this summer – happy wedding season!
