Dine Downtown: House Kitchen & Bar Dinner Preview

By the Editors

One of our favorite weeks of the year is starting today – Dine Downtown. This is where our favorite restaurants downtown offer a special three-course dinner for only $30 per person. Dine Downtown starts today and ends Sunday, January 16.

A few of our GOTG bloggers were invited to preview some of these great restaurants.  Today, guest blogger, Nikki Wardlaw, checked out House Kitchen & Bar. She had never been to the restaurant before for dinner and had always wanted to check it out.

This is a must stop spot for Dine Downtown week. I have not been to this restaurant before for dinner and I loved it. As soon as I walked in, I could feel the restaurant’s fun vibe and I knew I was going to have a great night!

Okay so the dinner. Um… delicious! There is a four course preset menu for $30. To start, we each had a yummy appetizer of stuffed zucchini and mushrooms. I was nervous since I don’t really like zucchini OR mushrooms but the chef proved that my fears were unfounded. It was absolutely delicious and I couldn’t believe that zucchini and mushrooms could taste so good.

Then the salad was a choice of a wedge or caesar salad. Of course, my roommate and I had one of each. Both were light and refreshing.

There are three entrée choices: stuffed chicken, steak or fish.  I selected the chicken and my roommate selected the steak. I found myself not wanting to give up my stuffed chicken to share with my roommate because it was so amazingly delicious!  I reluctantly did give her half and I wasn’t disappointed as I devoured the rest of the steak.  Needless to say, both were amazing.  As an added plus, each dinner came with a generous helping of mashed potatoes (which I love!). And the course came with brussel sprouts which again I am not a fan of  — are you seeing a trend here?? But I ate all of them too! I didn’t know veggies could taste so good.

Once I thought I could not possibly eat anything else, the dessert came out, and somehow, of course, I found room! We had the Boston Creme Pie and the Pineapple Upside Down Cake and both were equally delicious. (Note: these are not the desserts available for Dine Downtown week).

If this doesn’t seem like it could get better, it does. For $10 you can get three wine flights pared with the courses of the meal. You start with white for the appetizer and salad, red for the entrée and sparkling wine with dessert. What better way to finish off a fabulous meal than with some bubbles. Each wine were unique and went well with each course.

I feel like I got high class food and service on a limited budget. Not to mention, the vibe of the restaurant is really fun and a great place for young professionals. If you have not been to House, you are missing out! Dine Downtown week will be the perfect introduction.

If you want to check out House or one of the other great Dine Downtown restaurants, here’s the list. Have fun!
