Weekend Wrap Up: Best Buddies Fundraiser on the Grid

First Lady Maria Shriver

By Becky Warren

Last week, TEAM MARIA hosted a fundraiser at Cafeteria 15L with First Lady Maria Shriver to raise money for the Audi Best Buddies Challenge which will benefit Best Buddies International. It was a lively, fun event packed with people supporting a great cause. A big shout out to Donna Lucas, Karen Skelton and everyone else involved in putting on such a successful event!

Being there was motivating to sign up and participate in the Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Hearst Castle ride which is a 100-mile bike ride from Carmel to San Simeon on September 11, 2010.

For me 100 miles is too daunting with no time to train, so I’m considering r the 62, 35 or 15-mile rides.  If riding isn’t your thing, there is also a 3K walk and a 5K run led by Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis. This bike ride is a tremendous opportunity to enjoy what I think is the most scenic portion of the California coastline – from San Simeon to Carmel on Highway 1.

Best Buddies is a non-profit organization that enables one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

First Lady of California Maria Shriver serves as Honorary Chair of this event; and in the spirit of her mother Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Founder of the Special Olympics, she is bringing friends and family together to form TEAM MARIA.
