2nd Annual “Prom at the Park” to Benefit Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Sacramento

By Tiffany Mendoza

I often meet other young professionals who express interest in volunteering in the community but don’t know where to start. I always tell them there are so many ways to give back to the community, by volunteering their time and efforts and participating in local events.
I’m always happy to hear the interest people have in giving back and know that finding that special cause or organization that suits each person is important to making the commitment. For me, this happened when I found Big Brothers Big Sister and was matched with my “little,” Brandie.

This past April, I celebrated my 5 year anniversary with Brandie! People always ask why I am a Big and I tell them a few hours every week or two is such an easy thing to do – that’s all the commitment it takes.

And while I admit that dealing with a teenager can have its frustrating moments, Brandie and I really have a lot of fun together. We’ve been to Kings games, we go out to eat, get our nails done and even just hang out at my house and bake cookies. It’s rewarding to watch this young person blossom and sometimes I wonder if I don’t learn more from her than she does from me!

While I would encourage everyone to become a “Big,” I especially encourage all the ladies out there to share this with your husbands, boyfriends, brothers, fathers and male friends and co-workers. Big Brothers are desperately needed! At times, there are up to 100 boys in the Sacramento area waiting to be matched with a Big Brother.

However, getting involved can be even easier. On Friday, June 11th, the Young Professionals Committee of Big Brothers Big Sister is hosting the 2nd Annual Prom at the Park. Now, this isn’t your parent’s stuffy fundraiser. Instead, this event is for Sacramento’s 21 and up crowd and features red carpet photography and a VIP lounge experience at the Park Ultralounge. So get your prom date lined up and come dressed in your best. You can find more information and purchase tickets at www.PromAtThePark.com.
100% of the proceeds from online ticket sales go directly to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Sacramento – so get your tickets early. You’re sure to have a good time and you will go home knowing that the money raised increases the number of youth in our community matched with positive adult mentors.

Be a part of something Big and get involved. Get dolled up and come to Prom, become a Big or volunteer with the Young Professionals Committee. No matter how you choose to help, you will be making a difference in the life of a child.

You can find the Young Professional’s Committee of Big Brothers Big Sisters on Facebook. And don’t forget to buy your Prom tickets at www.PromAtThePark.com.
