Styling in Sacramento: Holiday Party Attire

By Devon Carey Berrier

Holiday-Party-E-ViteIt is that time again.  The lights are hung, the trees are sparkling and splendid, the mistletoe is strategically placed.  And the month of holiday parties has commenced.  Along with the excitement of the holiday season, comes the dread of having to find the perfect outfit to impress your new boss, your new boyfriend or girlfriend, or the parents and family of your new beloved.  I find that the best way to approach outfit decisions is to think about what you truly feel comfortable wearing and then try to accessorize with this season’s trends.  If you want to branch out and experiment with new things, just follow this easy-to-use Holiday Dress Guide—complete with local shopping tips and ideas.

Office Holiday Party:
officeThis is not the event to bust out your new sequin mini dress.  Remember that even though you may work with a certain hottie you want to impress, you don’t want to offend your boss or coworkers with your thigh high boots, fishnets, and short skirt (save that for your weekend holiday cocktail event with your girlfriends).  The best approach to dressing for your work party is to simply take something you normally wear to work (perhaps the perfect fit black sheath dress, or printed wrap dress) and add to it, with textured tights, a statement necklace, or this season’s adorable rhinestone embellished cardigan sweaters.  Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft have some amazing options—shocking, I know!

I am LOVING Ann Taylor’s sparkly accessories like as the Glass Pearl and Ribbon necklace, the Wool Jersey Ruffle Dress in a beautiful Garnet hue, and the Cashmere Ruffle Front Cardigan that comes in a variety of colors.

J. Crew also has some excellent options.   I personally love J. Crew for their crossover pieces—clothes that I can wear easily to work or to just hang out.  You can throw on the Sequin Scarf Cardigan or the Glimmer Pocket Cardigan over a simple black dress or a tank with dress slacks and be ready for any party—work or cocktail.  You can find Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft, and J. Crew right over at Arden Fair Mall.

parentsMeeting with Your Sweetie-Pie’s Family for the First Time:
Ah, the thrill of meeting your significant other’s family around the holidays can be overwhelming.  For me, I always worry about what to wear to make the best first impression—even if that means toning down my everyday attire.  Your first time meeting “The Fam” means wearing something subtle while still reflecting your personal style (this means that even if your guy’s family is uber preppy, you don’t need to feel obligated to run out and buy a Brooks Brothers button down and matching sweater set to impress them).  Nothing too short or tight will do for this event either.

An option I love for a holiday dinner is this adorable Sweater and Velvet Bow dress from Ann Taylor Loft (great price, too!) which can be paired with textured tights and booties for a comfortable and stylish look.  Another option, for a more casual meet-and-greet, is a great pair of boot-cut jeans like these Paige Premium Denim beauties from Nordstrom: worn with a fun tee, velvet blazer, and boots or heels.  Check out this great velvet blazer from J. Crew, which comes in a variety of festive colors.

Just remember to be yourself, look like yourself, and enjoy yourself when meeting the family of that special someone.

fun partyMy favorite pieces are sometimes short and sparkly, always girly, and never boring in color or style.  For a holiday gathering of friends it is appropriate to wear something shorter, tighter, and a little glitzier.  For options that won’t break the bank but will impress, head over to Forever 21 at Arden Fair Mall or Downtown Plaza, or the newly opened XXI Forever at the Roseville Galleria (it’s HUGE).  These stores can be overwhelming—generally overrun with giggling Tweens, but are worth the trip.  For cocktails and dancing, I love the Draped Tie Dress (under $30!!!) or the Crepe Chiffon Stud Dress in a lovely navy color. The best thing about Forever 21 and XXI Forever is they carry very trendy items at low and affordable prices, allowing you to try out new trends without breaking the bank.

If you just want to add a little sexiness and pizzazz to your out-on-the-town ensemble, try some brightly colored, sequined, or super high heels.  Franco Ferrini Shoes in Pavilions Shopping Center has an incredible selection of fun and original heels, and these Linea Paulo Platform Sandals are super fun and can be found at Nordstrom.

Holiday dressing should be fun and never stressful. Hopefully these tips will help you find the perfect item for that special event.  If you have any fashion savvy suggestions or shopping tips, please email me at girlsonthegrid AT gmail DOT com!

Love it! Good ideas!! I recently “re-discovered” Ann Taylor. They must have a new fashion director because I feel like in the past six months or so, their clothes have gotten remarkablely cuter. Or maybe I am just getting older – ha!

You are fabulous. These outfits work for anyone and you kept it so affordable! I would add that another fun piece to try right now is the STATEMENT NECKLACE. I just bought 3 at Banana Republic! They make plain tanks, t-shirts, and dresses so much more put together.
